Lonchodes hosei herberti Bragg, 2001
PSG no. 181
Origin of
culture stock: Brunei and Sabah
Sub Family: Lonchodinae Foodplant in captivity: I only use Bramble. Humidity requirements: The species seems to be content with living in a glass tank (mesh lid), and being sprayed just once or twice a week. Comment: This species is typical of the Lonchodes spp, in that it resembles nothing more than a twig. I sometimes notice them hanging down vertically from branches in their cage - see picture below. When disturbed it even drops to the floor - legs either side of the body - and will remain in this stick-like posture even when picked up. Of my mature pair, the female measures 12.5 cm in length (head to end of abdomen), and the male measures 11. 5 cm long. The adult female
is a dull brown colour, with a seemingly random pattern of mottled
lighter-coloured patches along the top of her body; these markings aid in
camouflaging her as a lichen-covered twig. The adult male has a slightly
shinier texture, and his colouration is composed of one single shade of dull
brown. His thorax has two small thorn-like protrusions, just above the hind leg. |
