Phobaeticus serratipes  (Gray, 1835)

PSG no. 25

Origin of culture stock: West Malaysia

Sub Family: Phasmatinae

Foodplant in captivity: Bramble.

Humidity requirements: This species should be kept in a very tall, airy cage.

Comment:  Phobaeticus serratipes is one of the longest phasmid species in existence.  London Zoo recently reported that they had a captive-reared female Phobaeticus serratipes measuring 45 cm in total length (BBC news, August 2004).  The longest female to be recorded in Malaysia measured 55cm in length, with a body of 28 cm.  London Zoo also stated that they believed their P. serratipes culture to be the only culture in the UK, a very inaccurate statement since many PSG members also rear this species, myself included.
